  1.      Installing "What PC? Pages" on your Psion 3a
  2.       
  3.       Please read all of this section, before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. This product contains 4 sections from the What PC? magazine's Buyer's
  6. Guide, being Desktop PCs, Word Processors, Spreadsheets and Creative
  7. Graphics & CAD.  Additional sections will be added during 1996.  The
  8. CD-ROM also contains demonstration versions of What PC? Pages and
  9. Transmedia Pages.  What PC? Pages includes a worldwide hotel directory
  10. and offers preferential rates to Psion users booking through its service.
  11. hat PC? book in excess of 1 million room nights per year.  Transmedia
  12. Pages contains directories of restaurants in the United Kingdom and in 
  13. Australia, which participate in the "Transmedia - The restaurant card" 
  14. programme.  Transmedia have over half a million members, who enjoy
  15. 25% savings on food and beverage at over 6,000 restaurants, worldwide.
  16. Complete the form contained in the file apply.txt and return it to 
  17. Transmedia UK.  Psion members receive 6 weekly, diskette based directory 
  18. updates, and, for a limited period, also receive 6 months free subscription
  19. to Transmedia's restaurant card.  You can copy any permutation of the
  20. supplied databases to your Psion Series 3a, depending on your personal
  21. requirements and the storage space you have available.  One copy of
  22. 'Pages Viewer' software, requiring approximately 95kb, is required to access
  23. any number of databases.  The databases, and their approximate sizes are 
  24. summarised below :

  35. Connect the Psion 3Link serial cable between the PC and your Psion 3a.  
  36. On the Psion, from the System screen, use Psion-l to set 'Remote link'  
  37. to 'On' and ensure the 'Baud rate' is set correctly.

  39. The installation procedure differs considerably depending on whether you 
  40. will use the DOS based RCOM or MCLINK programs supplied with earlier versions 
  41. of the Psion Serial Link, or whether you use Windows based PsiWin. 
  42.  
  43.      Go to SECTION 1, if you will use MCLINK or RCOM,       
  44.                or       
  45.      Go to SECTION 2, if you will use PsiWin (or are a MAC user)

  48. 1) Installation procedure  (Using RCOM or MCLINK)
  49. -------------------------------------------------
  50. On the PC, start RCOM or MCLINK.  If you are installing What PC? Pages from a 
  51. diskette, simply insert the diskette into your PC's diskette drive.  If you 
  52. are installing What PC? Pages from the hard disk of a PC, you should have 
  53. selected the base directory you copied all the files into.  You can easily 
  54. identify this directory, as it will contain this 'readme.1st' file and the 
  55. file 'pages.ini'.
  56.  
  57. Upgrading from an earlier software revision - Delete the file 
  58. \app\pages\mp_pages.opo on your Psion.  Then continue with the next step.
  59.  
  60. Copying the software - Copy the file pagesmgr.opa from your PC to any \app 
  61. directory on your Psion and use Psion-i on the Psion to install the PAGESmgr 
  62. program. Enter PAGESmgr on the Psion., answer a few simple questions, and the 
  63. software will be copied to the Psion.
  64.  
  65. Copying the database(s) - PAGESmgr will ask you if you want to load a 
  66. database from the PC.  Answering "Y" (for YES) will present you with a menu 
  67. of databases available on the PC.  Select a database, answer a few simple 
  68. questions, and the database will be copied to the Psion.  You can repeat this 
  69. step for every databases you want to download.  You can repeat it at any time 
  70. in the future, by simply entering PAGESmgr and selecting the appropriate 
  71. option.

  73. Exit PAGESmgr and use Psion-i to install PAGESi.opa on your Psion.  The 
  74. PAGESi icon will then appear on the screen.  Pressing 'Enter' on the PAGESi 
  75. icon will take you into 'What PC? Pages', allowing you to access, search and 
  76. view the databases you have just downloaded.  
  77.    
  78. You will see that with the software now fully loaded, if you re-enter 
  79. PAGESmgr, you will be presented with a new menu.  You will only need to use 
  80. these options if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions 
  81. and/or databases.  Such advanced use is documented in the file readme.2nd.

  84. 2) Installation procedure  (Using PsiWin or the MAC's Psion Link)
  85. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  86. This procedure assumes you know how to use standard Windows "drag & drop" techniques.  
  87. As you do NOT want to convert files during copying, ensure PsiManager has 
  88. conversion disabled.  You can check this in PsiWin's Psion Manager by 
  89. selecting "conversions" from the "setup" menu and ensuring the "allow convert 
  90. on Drag & Drop" box is clear, ie not selected.
  91.  
  92. Copying the software - Manually create the \app\pages directory on your 
  93. Psion, if it doesn't exist.  Copy the 2 files in the \app directory to a \app 
  94. directory on any device on your Psion 3a and then copy all files in the 
  95. \app\pages directory that start with the 3 characters 'mp_' and all files 
  96. that start with the 3 characters 'wp&', 'ex&' and 'tm&', to a \app\pages
  97. directory on your Psion.

  99. Copying the database(s) - For each database you want to copy to your Psion, 
  100. copy all files beginning with its 3 letter database code, (eg wpd ... see 
  101. above) from the \app\pages directory on the diskette, to a \app\pages 
  102. directory on any device on your Psion.

  104. Installing the software & database(s) - Use Psion-i to install the PAGESmgr 
  105. and PAGESi icons on the System screen.  Enter PAGESmgr and select 'Database 
  106. Install/Remove'.  Having selected the Install button, for each database you 
  107. copied to your Psion, enter the 3 letter database code (e.g.: wpd) to make 
  108. the databases active.  Exit PAGESmgr.  You will only need to use PAGESmgr 
  109. again if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions and/or 
  110. databases.  Such advanced use is documented in the file 'readme.2nd'.

  112. Press 'Enter' on the PAGESi icon, which will take you into 'What PC? Pages', 
  113. allowing to access, search and view the databases you have just downloaded.

  116. 3. Terms & Conditions of Use
  117.    -------------------------
  118. a. Great care has been taken throughout this product to be accurate.  However,
  119.    recognising that the information has been provided by a Third Party 
  120.    company, Mobile Software Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any errors 
  121.    or their consequences.

  123. b. You may use one copy of the supplied data, text, other information and 
  124.    software (the 'Licensed Materials'), only on one Psion Series 3a computer.
  125.    The Licensed Materials are solely for your own personal use and you may
  126.    not permit third parties to use the Licensed Materials without Mobile
  127.    Software Ltd's written consent.  The Licensed Materials may be transferred
  128.    to a third party on a permanent basis provided that you delete all copies
  129.    from your Psion, retain no other copies, and the third party agrees to
  130.    the terms of this agreement.

  132. c. The terms stated in section (b), above, are valid for all Mobile Pages
  133.    products, whether distributed on diskette, over the Internet or by any 
  134.    other means, independent of whether or not the products were distributed 
  135.    at a cost to the end user, or at no cost.

  156. c. Create your own "Mobile Pages" database
  157.    o "Pages Generator" is the PC based database generation package, used to
  158.      create relational, compressed databases, to be accessed on the Psion 3a
  159.      by our "Pages Viewer" software.
  160.    o "Pages Generator" can import information from virtually any corporate
  161.      database, via comma or tab separated text files, and as such,
  162.      is independent of the source database or application.

  165. 5. Other
  166.    -----
  167. a. The software supplied on this CD-ROM is the latest version available
  168.    and supercedes any previous releases.
  169.    
  170. b. Mobile Pages will always create small parameter files in the directory
  171.    m:\app\pages.  It will create this directory if it does not exist.
  172.  
  173. c. The file "pages.ini", stores information about databases held on the 
  174.    diskette, including their names and storage space requirements.  It is 
  175.    used as a part of the PAGESmgr based installation process described above 
  176.    and does not need to be copied to the Psion.
  177.  
  178. d. Contrary to general expectation, very often, searches on the database
  179.    will get increasingly faster when you add more menu based search criteria,
  180.    ie items that, having been selected, are displayed in the top row of
  181.    the search criteria screen.  This position is only true when you have 
  182.    the multiple types option set to ALL, ie all of the selected criteria 
  183.    must be true.  The opposite happens when it is selected to ANY!
